“Darkness soon came on and (the) only sound to be heard, where but a little while before all had been noise and confusion,

were the groans of the wounded and dying. Each party was occupied most of the night in carrying off and attending to their wounded.”

Battle of Malvern Hill, VA, July 1, 1862; the regiment suffered 173 men killed, captured, or missing.

The 4th Michigan Infantry was one of the first Michigan regiments to answer President Lincoln’s call for troops in 1861.

The regiment sent over 1000 young boys and men to serve in this elite unit. Along with these young soldiers was David P. Chamberlin,

a 37 year old surgeon from Hudson, Michigan. Chamberlin would write over 30 detailed letters back to the Hudson Gazette.

Beginning with the regiment’s first days in training camp and then their travels to the defense of the Capital in

Washington, D.C., following them through some of the nation’s most hellish battles in the

Eastern Theater such as Bull Run, Yorktown, Seven Days, Antietam, and Fredericksburg.
